The problem: not every ceiling should go perfectly smooth

Popcorn was often sprayed over drywall that was hung fast and finished lightly. Once the texture comes down, you may find joints that are not flat, boards that sag between framing, or a ceiling that has been patched several times. A smooth finish shows all of that.

You can fix it with more skim coats, but on a rough ceiling that adds time and cost. Sometimes the better answer is a modern, low-profile texture that hides the flaws and still looks nothing like popcorn.

The solution: choose the right modern texture

Three common options, from subtle to more pronounced.

Orange peel

A fine sprayed texture with a gentle dimpled look. It hides minor seams and roller marks, and it is the easiest to match and touch up. Good for bedrooms and hallways.

Knockdown

Spattered compound flattened with a wide knife shortly after spraying. It hides more than orange peel and suits living rooms, open plans and ceilings with visible waves.

Skip-trowel

Applied by hand with a trowel that skips across the surface. It has a looser, more rustic pattern and fits ranch-style and Western-style homes well.

Our process

  1. Test older texture first

Popcorn installed before 1986 gets sample testing before we disturb it.

  2. Contain and protect

Plastic sheeting covers floors and walls, vents are sealed and the work area is closed off.

  3. Scrape and repair

Popcorn comes down, loose tape is reset and damaged drywall is patched so the new texture sits on solid ground.

  4. Prime the bare drywall

A primer coat evens out porosity so the texture bonds and paint later looks uniform.

  5. Spray and knock down

We spray the chosen texture and, for knockdown, flatten it at the right moment. In Cheyenne's dry air that window is shorter, so timing is planned room by room.

  6. Clean up

Plastic comes down, debris is hauled off and the room is vacuumed. Add paint now or later.

When texture is the smarter choice

  • The drywall under the popcorn is wavy or has visible seams
  • The ceiling has old water-damage patches or repairs
  • Large windows send low, raking light across the ceiling
  • Other rooms already have knockdown and you want it to match
  • You want a lower-maintenance surface in a rental or busy household

Texture also suits homes where ceilings meet walls at uneven lines, which is common in older ranch homes around Cheyenne. A light knockdown softens those transitions instead of drawing attention to them. In rentals, texture hides the small dings and touch-ups that come with tenant turnover, and it can be touched up without repainting the whole ceiling.

Frequently asked questions

Is knockdown texture outdated like popcorn?

No. Knockdown and orange peel are low-profile textures that are still common in new construction across the West. They do not collect dust and cobwebs the way popcorn does, they are easy to paint, and they look clean and current. Popcorn is the texture most buyers want gone; a light knockdown rarely draws a second look.

What is the difference between knockdown and orange peel?

Orange peel is a fine spray that leaves a subtle dimpled surface, like the skin of an orange. Knockdown is a heavier spatter that is flattened with a trowel shortly after spraying, leaving flat islands with a mottled look. Knockdown hides more; orange peel is quieter. Skip-trowel is hand-applied and has a more rustic, irregular pattern.

When should I choose texture instead of a smooth ceiling?

Choose texture when the drywall under the popcorn has wavy joints, sags or lots of patching, when the room has strong side light that would show every flaw, or when you want to match texture in other rooms. Texture is also forgiving on large open ceilings. A smooth finish looks great but demands a flatter surface.

Can you match the texture in the rest of my house?

Usually, yes. We look at the existing pattern, size of the splatter and how flat it was knocked down, then adjust the spray and trowel work to come close. Matching is never perfect on an exact patch, which is why we often texture a full ceiling plane rather than a small section.

How much does new knockdown or orange-peel texture cost?

Scraping popcorn and applying a new knockdown or orange-peel texture typically runs $3.00 to $4.75 per sq ft of ceiling. Previously painted popcorn adds about 25%, ceilings over 9 feet about 15% and vaulted ceilings about 30%. These are estimates; your written quote will reflect the actual room sizes and condition.
